Oxalic acid, also referred to as ethanedioic acid, is characterized by the molecular formula C2H2O4 and comprises two carboxylic acid groups (-COOH). A 1% solution of oxalic acid is utilized in various specialized staining kits, including the Paraldehyde Fuchsin kit, Hematoxylin P.T.A. kit, Masson Fontana kit, and Reticulin Contrast kit. This 1% solution, which is a key component of the Elastica by Miller staining kit, primarily contains crystalline oxalic acid and distilled water. During the staining procedure, oxalic acid interacts specifically with tissue components, particularly elastic fibers. This interaction leads to a color change in the treated tissues, thereby enhancing the visible differentiation of tissue structures when observed under a microscope.
